Brazil health officials urge early detection of colorectal and liver disease
A study by the A.C. Camargo Cancer Center, in partnership with Nexus, found that eight in ten Brazilians identify blood in the stool or a month‑long change in bowel habits as serious warning signs, yet almost half of those who notice other symptoms do not seek medical care. Researcher Maria Paula Curado warned that early colorectal cancer may present as subtle changes in bowel rhythm, mild digestive issues, weight loss or loss of appetite, while later stages show visible bleeding or tarry stools, indicating larger tumors that require extensive treatment. The WHO projects that new colorectal cancer cases could almost double by 2050.
Medical experts also highlighted common signs of liver disease, including persistent fatigue, jaundice (yellow skin or eyes), right‑side abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, nausea, loss of appetite, dark urine and pale stools, urging prompt medical evaluation. Additionally, specialists explained that the color of blood in stool can help locate intestinal bleeding: bright red suggests a source in the rectum or anus, whereas black or tarry stools point to bleeding higher in the digestive tract. Early investigation of such bleeding improves the chances of simple and effective treatment.
