Brazil healthcare: Corporate plans account for 73% of private insurance

Brazil's healthcare landscape is characterized by a unique combination of a universal public system and a private supplemental sector heavily tied to employment. According to data from the Agência Nacional de Saúde Suplementar (ANS), there were 52.9 million medical assistance plan links in March 2026. Notably, approximately 73% of these, or 38.7 million links, are part of corporate collective plans.

The OECD has identified this configuration as unusual. Unlike in countries such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, or Portugal—where private insurance is often used alongside public systems for specific needs like faster specialist access—private insurance holders in Brazil tend to concentrate their healthcare usage within the private sector.

In contrast, preliminary estimates from the UK's Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that in 2025, voluntary insurance accounted for only 2.8% of total health spending, while government funding represented 81.3%.
