Brazil hosts climate forums to tackle impacts on vulnerable communities

On June 1, a Journalism and Climate Seminar organized by ((o))eco at ESPM Rio gathered journalists, community leaders, researchers and activists to discuss how climate change affects local territories and to showcase grassroots initiatives. Participants highlighted gaps in risk communication, noting that “as pessoas não estão sendo informadas, 38% relataram receber avisos, e só 1% declarou sentir-se muito bem informadas”. The event emphasized the need for better data on vulnerable populations and the role of community‑based reporting.

The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office will hold a public hearing on June 30 in Rio Branco, Acre, to examine climate‑related harms to indigenous, riverine and extractive communities. Prosecutors Lucas Costa Almeida Dias and Luidgi Merlo Paiva dos Santos aim to collect testimony for a civil inquiry into possible federal omissions in climate‑adaptation policies. The hearing will address constitutional rights such as health, housing, food security and access to water, and is part of the nationwide “Adaptação Climática em Foco” project that previously visited Recife, São Paulo and Porto Alegre.
