Brazil: Lula faces economic challenges and shifts focus to female voters
As the Brazilian presidential election approaches, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is facing challenges regarding the cost of living and high household debt. Although inflation remains within the Central Bank's target at 4.44% and unemployment is at historic lows, many citizens report a diminished sense of purchasing power. This economic perception provides an opening for his rival, Flávio Bolsonaro, who has campaigned on promises of tax cuts and lower food prices.
To counter these challenges, Lula's campaign is intensifying its focus on the female electorate, which constitutes over 52% of the national voting population. A major event is planned in Belo Horizonte to gather 5,000 female leaders to discuss issues such as gender equality, wage parity, and violence against women. Recent polling shows Lula holding a 12-point lead among women compared to Flávio Bolsonaro.
Simultaneously, various regional political movements are unfolding across Brazil. In the Northeast, candidates are navigating the phenomenon of 'voto casado' (split voting), where voters support Lula alongside local candidates from different parties. Meanwhile, local campaigns in Paraná and Maranhão are establishing committee headquarters to mobilize regional leaders and strengthen party alliances.
