Brazil implements advanced biological methods to combat dengue
Brazilian cities are implementing advanced biological and technological strategies to combat dengue fever. In Belém, Pará, authorities reported a 70.4% reduction in dengue cases, dropping from 2,997 in 2024 to 886 in 2025. This success is attributed to a combination of epidemiological surveillance, community mobilization, and the deployment of Larvicide Dissemination Stations (EDLs). Developed by Fiocruz Amazônia, these stations utilize the behavior of the Aedes aegypti mosquito to reach breeding sites.
In Foz do Iguaçu, the Zoonosis Control Center (CCZ) has entered the second stage of the Wolbachia method. This technique involves releasing Aedes aegypti mosquitoes carrying the Wolbachia bacteria, which reduces the transmission of dengue, zika, and chikungunya. The program, supported by Fiocruz and the Ministry of Health, aims to expand coverage to 100% of the municipality, covering 28 neighborhoods. Unlike genetic modification, this method relies on a naturally occurring bacterium to influence mosquito populations.
