Brazil implements gradual reduction of weekly work hours

Following the promulgation of Constitutional Amendment No. 141/2026 on October 16, Brazil has begun a transition to end the 6x1 work scale. The amendment mandates a reduction in the maximum weekly work limit from 44 to 40 hours without any nominal or proportional reduction in salaries or wage floors.

The transition occurs in two stages. On December 16, 2026, the maximum weekly limit will decrease to 42 hours, and workers will be entitled to two days of paid weekly rest. The final stage will be reached on December 16, 2027, when the limit settles at 40 hours per week.

Economic analyses suggest significant impacts across various sectors. Labor-intensive industries, such as services, retail, and education, face increased operational costs. For instance, a study by Economatica indicates that companies like Azzas 2154 and Yduqs could see substantial impacts on profits if costs are offset by new hires or overtime. In response, many businesses are evaluating automation, process reviews, and team reorganization to maintain productivity.
