Brazil implements Constitutional Amendment 141 to end 6x1 work schedule

Brazil has promulgated Constitutional Amendment 141, which officially ends the 6x1 work schedule and establishes a 5x2 model with two paid weekly rest days. The amendment, which modifies Article 7 of the Constitution, mandates a gradual reduction of the maximum weekly workload without any reduction in worker salaries.

The transition will occur in two stages: the maximum weekly workload will decrease from 44 to 42 hours starting December 16, 2026, and will further reduce to 40 hours starting December 16, 2027. This change affects millions of formal workers, including an estimated 2.6 million in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

While labor specialists describe the move as a historic victory for workers' rights, business sectors have expressed concerns regarding operational costs and staffing. The hospitality and retail sectors may pass increased labor costs to consumers, while the supermarket industry is exploring increased automation and self-service technologies to mitigate the impact of higher personnel expenses.
