Brazil implements infrastructure measures to counter El Niño weather extremes

Various Brazilian states are implementing preventive measures to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather driven by the El Niño phenomenon.

In Pará, Equatorial Pará is investing over R$ 100 million in a preventive plan to reinforce the electrical grid. The initiative includes 586 actions—such as substation inspections, transformer maintenance, and automation improvements—to handle increased energy demand caused by rising temperatures. Approximately 27% of these actions have already been completed.

In São Paulo, the state government is integrating climate prevention measures into highway concession contracts. To combat risks from intense rainfall, erosion, and landslides, authorities are planning slope stabilization, drainage improvements, and rainfall monitoring on major routes, including the Mogi-Dutra and Mogi-Bertioga highways. These efforts aim to reduce road vulnerability during periods of extreme weather predicted by the National Institute of Meteorology.
