Brazil implements new rearview mirror technical regulations

New technical regulations regarding vehicle rearview mirrors, established by Contran Resolutions 966/2022 and 912/2022, have now reached full implementation for all vehicles in production in Brazil.

The regulations set specific technical requirements for manufacturing, performance, installation, and field of vision. The implementation timeline was staggered by vehicle category: light vehicles, including cars and utility vehicles, met the requirements by October 18, 2024, while heavier vehicles such as buses and trucks reached compliance by October 18, 2025.

Drivers of older vehicles are not required to replace their original rearview mirrors. However, if a mirror is broken or needs replacement and the original characteristics cannot be maintained, the new equipment must meet the current minimum technical requirements. Maintaining functional and properly fixed mirrors remains a mandatory requirement for all drivers to avoid traffic fines.
