Brazil implements pension for orphans of femicide victims

Brazil has implemented a monthly pension of one minimum wage to support orphans of femicide victims. The benefit, regulated in late 2023, is managed by the INSS and targets biological children, stepchildren, and children under legal guardianship or state care who can prove economic dependency on the victim. The policy also extends to dependents of transgender women when the crime is classified as femicide.

Data from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security and the Ministry of Women indicate that Brazil recorded nearly 850 femicide victims between January and July 2026. The Brazilian Public Security Forum projects that this crime leaves more than 2,000 orphans annually in the country.

Legal experts emphasize that while the pension provides essential minimum income to combat economic vulnerability, additional support is required. This includes psychological monitoring, social assistance, and healthcare to help children and adolescents rebuild their lives following the violent loss of a caregiver.
