Brazil implements stricter driving license rules for elderly motorists

Drivers in Brazil aged 70 and older are facing stricter regulations regarding the renewal of their National Driver's License (CNH). The renewal period for this age group has been reduced from five years to three years, requiring more frequent assessments of physical and mental fitness.

During the renewal process, examiners conduct evaluations of vision, hearing, and other physical and mental capacities. If medical conditions or deficiencies are identified that could compromise driving safety, the renewal may be denied. In some instances, examiners may grant a license with a shorter validity period to monitor the driver's condition more closely.

Physiological changes associated with aging, such as reduced pupil dilation and decreased sensitivity in retinal rod cells, can impair night vision. Additionally, ocular diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are significant factors that can impact a driver's ability to navigate traffic safely, particularly in low-light conditions.
