Brazil implements technology and campaigns to combat rising road fatalities

Brazil is addressing rising road safety concerns through technological innovation and national awareness campaigns. Data from the Federal Highway Police (PRF) 2025 Statistical Yearbook highlights the severity of accidents involving commercial vehicles, which accounted for 23% of injuries and 46% of deaths on federal highways last year. Specifically, truck-related incidents resulted in nearly 20,000 injuries and over 2,800 deaths.

To combat issues like driver distraction and fatigue, new driver assistance technologies are being utilized. Systems such as Bosch’s Servotwin provide electro-hydraulic steering to correct involuntary lane departures, while Driver Monitoring Cameras (DMC) use AI to detect signs of fatigue and alert drivers.

Simultaneously, national traffic campaigns are emphasizing the dangers of speeding. In 2025, Brazilian federal highways recorded a historic high of over 7.2 million speeding citations. The National Traffic Council’s current educational message, “Slow down. Your greatest asset is life,” focuses on how speed reduces reaction time and increases the kinetic energy involved in collisions, leading to more severe injuries.
