Brazil implements varying alcohol restrictions for 2026 election runoff
Alcohol restrictions, commonly known as 'Lei Seca eleitoral', are being applied inconsistently across Brazil during the second round of the 2026 elections. Because the measure is not a national mandate, regulations are determined by individual Regional Electoral Courts (TRE) in coordination with state security secretariats.
In Acre, the prohibition is in effect from midnight until 4:00 PM on Sunday, covering sales, distribution, and consumption in public spaces and commercial establishments. In Pará, restrictions apply from midnight until 6:00 PM on Sunday. Tocantins features varying rules: a statewide ban from midnight to 5:00 PM on Sunday, with specific municipalities implementing restrictions starting Saturday evening.
Conversely, several major states have opted not to implement these restrictions. Minas Gerais, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo have confirmed there will be no prohibition on the sale or consumption of alcoholic beverages. In Amazonas, the restriction for Manaus was revoked by the TRE-AM on October 23.
