Brazil inaugurates first Central-West autism research center as Senate proposes SUS noise protectors

A new Center for Studies on Autism Spectrum Disorders (Cetea) was inaugurated in Brasília, marking the first dedicated autism research facility in Brazil's Central-West region. The center, linked to the School of Public Health of the Federal District, brings together 25 researchers to conduct interdisciplinary scientific and clinical studies, compile epidemiological data, and support public policy development for autism.

Separately, Senator Ciro Nogueira has introduced a legislative proposal (PL 2.596/2026) to allow the Unified Health System (SUS) to provide noise‑reduction devices, such as ear protectors, to individuals with autism who experience auditory hypersensitivity. The bill would amend Brazil's health and inclusion laws to classify these devices as assistive technology, pending professional indication and individual need.

Both initiatives aim to improve services and inclusion for people with autism in Brazil.
