Brazil includes SGDC-2 satellite project in Growth Acceleration Program
The Brazilian government has included the development of the second Geostationary Defense and Strategic Communications Satellite (SGDC-2) in the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC). Minister of Communications Frederico Siqueira Filho announced that resources have been reserved in the 2027 Annual Budget Law (PLOA) to initiate project studies.
The initiative aims to ensure the continuity of essential communications as the current SGDC-1 satellite approaches the end of its operational lifespan. The SGDC-1, launched in 2017 and built by Thales Alenia Space, provides dual-use capabilities for both civilian telecommunications and military defense.
The SGDC-2 project is intended to bolster national sovereignty by providing secure management of sensitive data and transmissions. Its planned applications include defense, monitoring, and sensing of strategic areas, such as critical mineral sites and border points.
