Brazil industry warns of cost spikes from proposed work‑hour cut

Industrial leaders in Brazil say recent proposals to cut the legal workweek from 44 to 40 hours and to end the 6‑day plus‑1‑day (6×1) schedule could raise operating costs, reduce competitiveness and shrink production. Alex Carvalho, president of the Pará Federation of Industries (FIEPA), called the way the measure is being pushed “disastrous,” warning it could drive up inflation, affect housing programs such as Minha Casa Minha Vida and hurt vulnerable regions. A CNI survey of manufacturers found 97 % anticipate some impact, with 85 % expecting higher labour expenses and 70 % fearing a drop in competitiveness. Majorities opposed the changes – 73 % reject a 44‑to‑40‑hour cut without wage reduction, and 57 % oppose abolishing the 6×1 shift. Industry groups urge a gradual, sector‑specific approach and a more detailed debate in the Senate.
