Brazil insurance market covers 9% of climate disaster losses
The Brazilian insurance market covers approximately 9% of the economic losses resulting from climate disasters, according to a study by the Confederação Nacional das Seguradoras. This figure is significantly lower than the 20% to 55% average coverage seen in developed nations.
Regional disparities are notable, with the North and Northeast regions of Brazil seeing average coverage of less than 2%. Between 2022 and 2024, 67 significant climate events caused estimated economic losses of R$ 184 billion. Additionally, 10 events recorded through June 2025 have already totaled R$ 31 billion in losses.
In 2024, total indemnities paid in the sector reached R$ 60.4 billion, with climate-related events accounting for R$ 7.3 billion, or roughly 12% of that total. The Patrimonial insurance group, which includes residential and business products, represented 58% of these disaster-related payouts.
