Brazil election: Risks for vehicle insurance and utility safety

As the 2026 election period approaches in Brazil, authorities and industry experts are issuing warnings regarding electoral propaganda.

Insurance experts from FenSeg and the IBDS clarify that simply applying political stickers to a private vehicle does not automatically void insurance coverage. However, using a vehicle for active campaign duties—such as transporting materials, moving teams, or participating in rallies—constitutes a change in risk profile. If a driver fails to update their policy from 'private' to 'commercial/advertising' use, insurers may refuse coverage for theft, collision, or vandalism caused by political unrest.

Utility companies, including Equatorial Goiás and Enel Ceará, have also issued alerts. They warn against attaching campaign materials to electricity poles or meters. Such actions pose severe risks of electric shock and can obstruct meter readings, potentially leading to incorrect billing or service suspension. Additionally, placing propaganda on public property is prohibited and may result in fines for candidates and parties.

In Mato Grosso, the Regional Electoral Court (TRE-MT) has introduced the 'Pardal' application, which utilizes artificial intelligence to help citizens report illegal campaign activities, such as improper sticker placement or unauthorized propaganda locations.
