Brazil introduces alphanumeric CNPJ format for new registrations

From 31 July 2026 Brazil’s Federal Revenue Service will issue the Cadastro Nacional da Pessoa Jurídica (CNPJ) in an alphanumeric format for all new registrations. The change adds letters to the first 12 digits while the final two verification digits remain numeric, expanding possible combinations from about 100 million to nearly three trillion.

Existing CNPJs will remain unchanged and do not require any modification. The reform is described as a preventive technical measure, not a new tax or fiscal obligation, aimed at avoiding exhaustion of numeric codes as business formation continues to grow.

Businesses of all sizes are advised to review and update ERP systems, invoicing software, databases, and integrations with banks, government portals and partners to handle the new identifier. Failure to adapt could cause operational glitches such as invoice errors or transaction delays.
