Brazil's Detran RS Allows Online Requests for Definitive Driver Licenses

The Department of Transit of Rio Grande do Sul (Detran RS) has opened an online service that lets new drivers request the definitive Carteira Nacional de Habilitação (CNH) through the Detran portal. Eligible motorists are those who have completed the first year of provisional licensing without serious or repeated infractions and are listed in the federal positive driver registry. Applicants log in with Gov.br, verify their data, choose a delivery point, and pay the R$ 80.37 fee. In cases requiring a medical or psychological assessment, an in‑person visit to a driving school remains mandatory.

Separately, the Ministry of Transport continues to expand automatic renewal for drivers with clean records, reducing paperwork but still requiring fees and occasional exams. Experts also advise that obtaining a CNH early can broaden employment opportunities, emphasizing the license as a professional investment rather than merely a travel document.
