Brazil introduces new vaccines to combat pneumonia and meningitis
New pneumococcal vaccines are being introduced in Brazil to combat diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis. In the state of Alagoas, the Pneumo 20 vaccine is now available through municipal health secretariats and basic health units. This vaccine protects against 20 serotypes of the bacteria and is targeted at children under 5, indigenous peoples aged 5 and older without prior vaccination, and specific elderly populations, including those aged 60 to 84 who are bedridden or institutionalized, and those aged 85 or older.
Additionally, Anvisa has approved Capvaxive, a 21-valent conjugate vaccine produced by Merck Sharp & Dohme. This vaccine protects against 21 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae and is indicated for adults aged 18 and older. While approved, there is currently no scheduled date for its availability in private clinics or through the Unified Health System (SUS).
