Brazil investigates religious intolerance and hate speech incidents
Authorities in Brazil are investigating two separate incidents involving religious intolerance and discriminatory speech.
In Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, an Assembly of God church was found vandalized with hate speech. The graffiti included the phrase ‘morram cristãos’ (die Christians) alongside a symbol associated with terrorism. The local pastor reported the incident to the police, and the Council of Pastors of Mato Grosso do Sul has issued a formal note of repudiation. Investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible.
In the Federal District, the Civil Police have opened an investigation into Father Moacir Anastácio de Carvalho following allegations of homophobia. During a live-streamed mass at the São Pedro Parish in Taguatinga, the priest reportedly used derogatory language regarding elected officials and political candidates. The investigation is being handled by the specialized unit for crimes of racial, religious, or sexual orientation discrimination.
