Brazil issues beach bathing safety warnings in Alagoas and Paraíba

Environmental agencies in Brazil have released new bathing‑safety alerts for the northeastern coast. The Instituto do Meio Ambiente de Alagoas (IMA) found that 10 of 68 surveyed beach sections are unsuitable for swimming, including eight points in Maceió (Jatiúca, Pajuçara, Ponta Verde, Avenida, Sobral and others) and isolated spots in Barra de São Miguel and Maragogi.

The Superintendência de Administração do Meio Ambiente (Sudema) in Paraíba identified four unsafe sections: Tambaú, Jacarapé e Sol in João Pessoa, and Avenida Beira‑Mar and Acaú/Pontinha in Pitimbu. Both reports cite elevated levels of Escherichia coli and advise the public to avoid bathing near river mouths, canals, and areas with algal blooms, warning of potential gastrointestinal and other infections.
