Brazil issues over 1 million digital certificates monthly

Brazil is issuing more than 1 million digital certificates per month, reaching a total of over 15 million active certificates. In June 2026, issuance rose by 11.3% compared to the same month in 2025, according to the National Institute of Information Technology (ITI).

These certificates are essential for legal document signing, accessing pre-filled income tax declarations, and participating in judicial processes. The ITI serves as the root certifying authority for the Brazilian Public Key Infrastructure (ICP-Brasil), ensuring the legal validity, integrity, and authenticity of electronic transactions.

As the market evolves, the landscape of providers has shifted. Serasa Experian ceased issuing digital certificates in February 2024, though existing certificates remain valid until their expiration. Experts warn that users should consult the official ITI list of accredited entities rather than relying on internet rankings or AI assistants, which may provide outdated information. Purchasing certificates from non-accredited companies poses risks to data privacy and document validity.
