Brazil-Japan Private Law Congress at Brazil's Supreme Court

The Superior Tribunal de Justiça (STJ) will host the 2nd Brazil‑Japan Congress of Private Law on 3‑4 August in its Salão Nobre. The event, titled “The Evolution of Private Law,” aims to deepen legal cooperation between Brazil and Japan and will feature simultaneous Portuguese‑English translation. Opening remarks will be given by STJ president Herman Benjamin, Japanese ambassador Yasushi Noguchi, and Brazilian ambassador Octávio Henrique Côrtes, among other judges and scholars from both countries. Five panels will address topics such as the publicisation of private law, trends in private law, legal aspects of commerce, investment and supply chains, consumer law, and the future of the legal profession. The closing session will be led by Professor Kazuo Watanabe of the University of São Paulo, moderated by Federal Judge Carlos Muta. The congress celebrates the long‑standing Brazil‑Japan partnership, which marks 130 years of diplomatic relations in 2025 and is supported by sizable Japanese‑Brazilian communities in both nations.
