Brazil judge denies release of man who killed his aunt
A judge has denied the request for the release of Lumar Costa da Silva, the individual responsible for the 2019 killing of his aunt, Maria Zélia da Silva, in Sorriso. Despite a report from the Adauto Botelho Integrated Psychosocial Care Center suggesting he was lucid and cooperative, Judge Caroline Schneider Guanaes Simões ruled that his history of extreme violence necessitates continued detention.
Silva, who was declared legally incapable due to bipolar disorder, had previously been released for outpatient treatment in São Paulo in June 2025. However, that attempt at reintegration failed when he was arrested again in November for threatening his ex-wife and daughter. The judge emphasized that his current stability is a result of a controlled environment and mandatory medication, and ordered a specialized medical-legal expert examination before any future reconsideration of his status.
