Brazil keeps electricity tariff flag yellow for July, adding R$1.88 per 100 kWh

Brazil's electricity regulator, the Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica (Aneel), confirmed that the tariff flag will remain at the yellow level throughout July. The yellow flag triggers an extra charge of R$1.885 for every 100 kilowatt‑hours consumed by customers connected to the National Interconnected System (SIN). Aneel explained that the decision reflects the typical dry season, which lowers hydro‑electric generation and forces greater use of more expensive thermal power plants.

The tariff‑flag system, introduced in 2015, signals monthly cost variations for electricity generation. A green flag means no additional charge, while yellow adds the R$1.88 per 100 kWh surcharge. Red flags impose higher surcharges of R$4.46 or R$7.87 per 100 kWh, depending on the severity level. “A manutenção da bandeira amarela, ativa desde abril, reflete condições menos favoráveis de geração no País…”, Aneel said, noting the reduced reservoir levels and higher thermal‑plant costs.

Consumers nationwide will see the additional fee on their July electricity bills as the regulator and the National System Operator (ONS) continue to monitor generation conditions and balance supply and demand.
