Brazil Labor Minister Luiz Marinho Pushes 40‑Hour Work Week and AI Safeguards at Geneva ILO Conference

President Lula signed a decree regulating the Private Security Statute while Labor Minister Luiz Marinho addressed the 114th International Labour Conference in Geneva. Marinho highlighted Brazil’s push to cut the standard work week from 44 to 40 hours without reducing pay and to end the 6‑day‑on‑1‑day‑off schedule, noting the creation of more than five million formal jobs in recent months. He warned that artificial‑intelligence deployment must protect workers’ autonomy and called for responsible AI use in the labour market.

In a parallel tripartite meeting, the minister sat with representatives of the Confederação Nacional do Comércio (CNC) and trade‑union delegates to discuss platform‑economy regulation, gender‑equality measures and AI’s impact on employment. The delegation also met UK officials to prepare for the G20 employment working group, underscoring Brazil’s active role in shaping international labour standards.
