The proposal seeks to reduce the maximum weekly work hours from 44 to 40 and guarantee two paid weekly rest days, without reducing worker salaries. If approved, the change would follow a gradual transition: reducing the limit to 42 hours within two months, and then to 40 hours after one year.

In response to the legislative progress, labor unions and social movements have organized nationwide demonstrations. In São Paulo, protests occurred on Avenida Paulista, while in Brasília, workers held vigils in front of the Senate. These movements aim to pressure lawmakers to approve the reform, which reportedly enjoys significant public support.

Amidst these labor discussions, separate protests occurred in Rio de Janeiro. Workers and the Retail Workers Union protested against Casas Bahia, accusing the company of a lack of transparency regarding mass dismissals made shortly before its judicial recovery filing. The union is seeking further mediation through the Labor Prosecutor's Office.
