Brazil labor unions campaign to end 6x1 work schedule
Labor unions in Brazil are mobilizing to demand a reduction in the weekly working hours from 44 to 40 and the abolition of the ‘6x1’ work schedule, which requires six days of work for one day of rest. Proponents argue that these changes are essential for improving quality of life, allowing workers more time for family, rest, and leisure without salary reductions.
The legislative debate centers on PEC 221/2019, which has already seen support in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate's Constitution and Justice Committee. The proposal awaits a plenary vote in the Senate.
In contrast, an opposition proposal, PEC 12/2026, authored by Senator Rogério Marinho, suggests allowing workers to negotiate their schedules individually with employers. Critics of the opposition stance argue this could lead to precarious working conditions and hourly-based pay that undermines existing rights.
