Brazil launches Boto Fé no Voto campaign to curb election disinformation in churches

The national "Boto Fé no Voto" campaign was officially launched on Thursday, 30 May, at the Cathedral Anglican of Brasília. Led by Sônia Mota, executive director of the Coordinating Ecumenical Service (Cese), the initiative targets the spread of false information during the 2026 elections, focusing on Brazil’s faith communities. Its slogan, “Eu escolho a verdade” (I choose the truth), reflects a call for responsible citizenship and democratic participation.

The campaign will organise dialogue circles, training sessions, and produce educational materials, videos, podcasts and digital content to promote informed voting and ethical communication. Partner organisations include Coletivo Bereia, Coletivo Novas Narrativas, Cáritas Brasileira, Fé no Clima/Iser, Diaconia, Frente de Evangélicos pelo Estado de Direito, the National Council of Christian Churches (Conic) and the Episcopal Anglican Church of Brazil. This effort coincides with new rules from Brazil’s Electoral Justice (TSE) that require identification of AI‑generated content and ban deepfakes in electoral advertising. A DataSenado survey found that 81 % of Brazilians believe fake news influences election outcomes and 72 % have encountered false news on social media.
