Brazil launches national week to boost artisanal fishing and showcases Santos project results
The Valoriza Pesca initiative presented its results in Santos, highlighting a digital platform, a documentary on artisanal fishing and outcomes tied to a 2015 Ultracargo fuel‑tank fire settlement. The project, part of a conduct‑adjustment agreement, targets environmental recovery and livelihood support for coastal fishing communities in the Baixada Santista.
On June 1, Minister of Agriculture André de Paula and Fisheries Minister Edipo Araújo opened Brazil’s first National Week of Promotion of Artisanal Fishing, instituted by Law 15.414. The week, anchored around June 29 – Saint Peter’s day – aims to recognize more than one million artisanal fishers nationwide, honour several support programs, and inaugurated a new fishing‑activity monitoring centre to improve safety and resource sustainability.
