Brazil launches Outubro Verde campaign to combat syphilis

Health authorities in Brazil are utilizing the ‘Outubro Verde’ (Green October) campaign to raise awareness about syphilis, emphasizing the risks of the infection when left undiagnosed. Medical experts warn that syphilis can remain asymptomatic for long periods, potentially leading to severe complications in the nervous and cardiovascular systems, or even death.

Special attention is being directed toward pregnant women to prevent congenital syphilis, which occurs when the infection is transmitted from mother to baby. Health officials recommend that pregnant women undergo testing at the beginning of prenatal care, during the third trimester, and at birth.

Diagnosis can be achieved through a rapid test that provides results in approximately 20 minutes. Treatment is available for free through the Unified Health System (SUS). Experts stress that sexual partners must also be treated to prevent reinfection and advocate for the consistent use of condoms as a primary prevention method.
