Brazil launches research project on border security policies

The Núcleo de Estudos da Violência at the University of São Paulo (NEV‑USP) has started a research project titled “Fronteiras da segurança: políticas de segurança pública nos limites do Brasil.” Funded by CAPES through the Procad‑SPD programme, the initiative will compile a database of scientific production on border security and conduct field studies in three high‑complexity frontier zones: Tabatinga in Amazonas (bordering Colombia and Peru), Dourados in Mato Grosso do Sul (near Paraguay), and Santana do Livramento in Rio Grande do Sul (bordering Uruguay). The project brings together researchers from several Brazilian universities—including USP, Unicamp, UFGD, UEA, and UFRGS—as well as international partners such as the University of Toronto and San Diego State University, aiming to inform public‑security policies that address organized crime, smuggling, and illegal logging in these regions.
