Brazil launches Setembro Roxo campaign for cystic fibrosis awareness

The 'Setembro Roxo' (Purple September) campaign is a national initiative in Brazil dedicated to raising awareness about cystic fibrosis, a rare disease also known as 'salty kiss disease'. Established officially in 2016 by the Instituto Unidos pela Vida, the campaign aims to educate the public on symptoms and the importance of early diagnosis to improve patient quality of life.

Cystic fibrosis affects approximately 6,000 people in Brazil and 105,000 worldwide. The condition causes thicker bodily secretions, which can lead to persistent coughing, recurrent pneumonia, and difficulty gaining weight. In Brazil, the disease can be identified through the 'Teste do Pezinho' (heel prick test) for newborns, with confirmation via sweat tests or genetic exams.

In Curitiba, several landmarks, including the Botanical Garden greenhouse and the Ponte Estaiada, are participating in the mobilization by being illuminated in purple from September 10 to 14 to increase the visibility of the cause.
