Brazil: Lawyers Used as Messengers for Criminal Gangs Spark OAB Controversy

In Ceará, Brazil, the special criminal‑organisations police (Gaeco) conducted an operation that arrested 11 lawyers accused of acting as "pombos‑correio" – messengers for faction leaders. Authorities seized a armored Range Rover, cash worth R$20 million, electronics and jewelry, and claimed the lawyers facilitated communication, territorial expansion, weapon procurement and drug trafficking for the groups.

Separately, the São Paulo branch of the Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil (OAB‑SP) petitioned for a special, well‑equipped cell for influencer‑lawyer Deolane Bezerra dos Santos, who faces charges of laundering money for the PCC. The OAB‑SP’s request contrasts with its lack of similar advocacy for the other 20 detained lawyers, drawing criticism over unequal treatment. Deolane’s cell offers amenities such as private bathroom, air‑conditioning and personal items, while other imprisoned lawyers remain in standard facilities.
