Brazil: Legal developments in two separate femicide cases

Two separate legal proceedings regarding femicide in Brazil have reached significant milestones. In Santa Quitéria, a man named Adriano was sentenced to 16 years in prison for the killing of his partner, Maria dos Aflitos. The crime, which occurred in September 2023, involved physical assaults and a fatal knife wound to the neck. Evidence presented during the investigation included personal diary entries from the victim documenting previous episodes of violence.

In Cuiabá, military police officer Ricker Maximiano de Moraes will face a jury trial for the shooting death of his wife, G. D. S., in May 2025. The incident reportedly took place in the presence of the couple's young children. While the defendant admitted to the shooting, citing psychiatric issues and emotional distress, a psychiatric report determined he possesses partially preserved cognitive capacity. The court has rejected requests for summary acquittal, moving the case toward a jury trial.
