Eduardo Bolsonaro: Brazil's Supreme Court upholds coercion conviction
Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) First Panel has unanimously upheld the conviction of former deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro. The court rejected an appeal by the defense, maintaining a sentence of four years and two months in prison for the crime of coercion during a legal process.
The ruling, decided by a 4-0 vote from ministers Flávio Dino, Cristiano Zanin, Cármen Lúcia, and Alexandre de Moraes, found that Bolsonaro orchestrated efforts to pressure the Brazilian judiciary. According to the Prosecutor General's Office (PGR), these actions included lobbying for U.S. tariffs on Brazilian exports and attempting to trigger Magnitsky Act sanctions and visa revocations against Supreme Court and federal government ministers.
The court determined these maneuvers were intended to interfere with judicial proceedings and prevent the conviction of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, in a case involving an alleged coup attempt. In addition to the prison sentence, the conviction renders Eduardo Bolsonaro ineligible for public office for up to eight years.
