Brazil legend Zico warns Brazil of Japan’s rise ahead of World Cup 2026

Former Brazilian star Zico told FIFA that Japan have become a “high‑quality risk” for the five‑time champions. He noted that 23 of Japan’s 26 squad members play in Europe’s top leagues and that the team has improved tactically and psychologically, citing recent wins over Germany, Spain and England. Zico recalled the 2006 World Cup meeting, when Brazil beat Japan 4‑2 while he was Japan’s coach, and said the upcoming group‑stage clash on June 29 will be a “great match”.

Brazil will field a restored attacking line‑up with the return of Neymar and the form of Vinicius Jr, supported by Matheus Cunha. Japan qualified as Group F runner‑up after a win and two draws, securing the knockout‑stage spot for the second consecutive tournament. Both sides are preparing for a decisive encounter in the round of 32.
