Rio Doce mouth fishing released after ten year ban

Fishing activities have been authorized in the marine area near the mouth of the Rio Doce, between Aracruz and Linhares in Espírito Santo, Brazil. This decision follows a ten year suspension that began in 2016 after the Fundão dam collapse in Mariana, Minas Gerais, which raised concerns regarding the contamination of fish, mollusks, and crustaceans.

The release was formalized by the Ministry of Fishing and Aquaculture (MPA) and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA), based on a technical note from the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). The agency reported no toxicological risks for human consumption, noting that levels of lead and mercury remain below national and international legal limits.

Professional fishing must be conducted by registered fishermen and vessels in compliance with current regulations, including closed seasons, protected species, and minimum catch sizes. The resumption will be overseen by an Integrated Action Plan coordinated by the MPA and MMA, involving the Ministry of Health and Anvisa to monitor and evaluate the activity through continuous scientific and technical assessment.
