Brazil lifts urgency on 6x1 work schedule bill, freeing legislative agenda

The Brazilian federal government withdrew the presidential urgency label from the bill (PL 1.838/2026) that would end the 6‑day‑on/1‑day‑off work schedule. Removing the urgency stops the bill from blocking other votes, allowing the Chamber of Deputies to consider priority measures such as raising the cap for Individual Micro‑entrepreneurs (MEI), regulating artificial intelligence and criminalising misogyny.

The change follows pressure from Chamber president Hugo Motta and comes as the related constitutional amendment (PEC) faces opposition in the Senate, where President Davi Alcolumbre has signalled dissent. The government said it will continue dialogue with the Senate to complete the reform, but the removal of urgency means the proposal will now proceed through the usual committee reviews rather than being forced through a fast‑track vote.
