Brazil limits free election broadcast slots to four presidential candidates in 2026 vote
Brazil's 2026 presidential election will grant free electoral airtime on radio and television in the first round only to four candidates: Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), Flávio Bolsonaro (PL), Ronaldo Caiado (PSD) and Augusto Cury (Avante). The limitation stems from a stricter "cláusula de barreira" that requires parties to have achieved a minimum performance in the previous Chamber of Deputies election (at least 2.5% of the national vote in nine states or 13 deputies in a third of the states).
The distribution rule assigns 90% of the airtime proportionally to each party's representation in the Chamber and the remaining 10% equally among the eligible candidates. Projected blocks give Lula about 5 minutes 32 seconds, Bolsonaro roughly 4 minutes 20 seconds, Caiado 2 minutes 11 seconds and Cury about 36 seconds per broadcast. Candidates from parties that did not meet the clause, such as Romeu Zema (Novo) and Renan Santos (Missão), will not receive free airtime, but they may still appear in televised presidential debates, which follow separate invitation criteria. Party alliances can alter the proportional share, influencing how much time each candidate ultimately receives.
