Brazil livestock production hits record value despite cattle herd decline

According to 2025 data from IBGE, Brazil's livestock sector reached a record production value of R$ 141.2 billion, despite a 1.7% decrease in the national cattle herd, which fell to 234.3 million head. This decline in cattle numbers is attributed to increased slaughter rates, particularly of females. However, cow milk production reached a record 36.7 billion liters, marking its third consecutive year of growth.

Regionally, Minas Gerais remains the national leader in livestock production value, contributing R$ 29.7 billion, or 21% of the country's total. This state's economy is heavily driven by milk production, which generated R$ 25.1 billion. Minas Gerais also holds leading positions in quail egg, horse, and tilapia production.

In the state of Piauí, egg production reached a historic high of 35.3 million dozen, generating R$ 260.7 million. This represents a 121% increase in volume compared to 2013. The Northeast was the only Brazilian region to report an increase in the cattle herd, growing by 2.2%.
