Umarizal: Man arrested for allegedly stabbing girlfriend after election results
An 18-year-old man, Eduardo Ronald Ferreira, was arrested in Umarizal, Rio Grande do Norte, for the alleged attempted femicide of his girlfriend, Clara Thaís Silva Maia, also 18. The attack reportedly occurred following a dispute over the presidential election results.
According to the victim's lawyer, the assault happened after Clara celebrated the victory of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The suspect, described as a supporter of Flávio Bolsonaro, allegedly struck the victim at least four times in the neck and trachea. The victim was rushed to a hospital in Mossoró, underwent emergency surgery, and has since been moved from the intensive care unit to a regular ward. While she is recovering, she is currently unable to speak.
Police are investigating whether political disagreement was the primary motive. Reports indicate the families held opposing political views, and the suspect had previously expressed contempt for opposing political positions to peers. The suspect was caught in flagrante and his arrest has been converted to preventive detention. The victim's legal counsel intends to seek protection under the Maria da Penha Law.
