Brazil mandates health insurance coverage for hormonal IUDs to treat endometriosis

Starting October 1, health insurance providers in Brazil must cover hormonal intrauterine devices (IUD) or intrauterine systems (IUS) for patients with endometriosis. This mandate follows Normative Resolution No. 680 issued by the National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS), which updates the mandatory list of health procedures.

Coverage is required under two specific conditions: when the use is indicated in the product's labeling registered with Anvisa, or when patients have a contraindication or non-adherence to combined oral contraceptives. The coverage includes both the device itself and the implantation procedure.

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, causing inflammation and pain. While insurance companies were already required to cover non-hormonal copper IUDs for family planning, this new rule specifically addresses the treatment of endometriosis symptoms through levonorgestrel-releasing devices. Similar coverage guidelines have been in place for the Unified Health System (SUS) since 2025.
