Brazil marks Lasagna Day on July 29 with vegetarian and sardine recipes

July 29 is celebrated as Lasagna Day, an international observance that highlights the popular layered pasta dish. The celebration references the dish’s origins from ancient Roman cuisine and its evolution in medieval Italy before becoming a staple in Brazilian households.

Two recipes were highlighted for the occasion. One is a vegetarian lasagna that layers corn, peas, hearts of palm, mushrooms and tomato sauce with cream, mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. The other is a sardine lasagna that combines canned sardines, tomato sauce, requeijão cheese and a white sauce, finished with grated Parmesan and a baked crust.

Both dishes rely on readily available canned ingredients, emphasizing convenience, nutrition and the communal aspect of sharing a hearty meal.
