Brazil marks Writer's Day with literary events and film selections

Brazil observes National Writer's Day on July 25, a holiday instituted in 1960 by Education Minister Pedro Paulo Penido to honor authors and preserve cultural memory. Celebrations span the country, with the Amazonas region highlighting the role of writing through a program at Manaus' Centro Cultural dos Povos da Amazônia, where writers, scholars and readers gather for book launches, round‑tables and poetry sessions. Erica Lima Barbosa, vice‑president of AJEB‑AM, emphasized writing as a bridge across generations.

Educators linked to the International Schools Partnership compiled a list of 33 film adaptations of classic literature—including works by Shakespeare, Austen, Orwell, Hugo, García Márquez, Saramago and Tolkien—to encourage students to engage with the original books. Teachers note that cinema can spark curiosity, deepen understanding of universal themes and develop critical thinking skills.
