Brazil Ministry of Education updates medical residency rules

The Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC) has published new regulations for medical residency programs across the country. Defined by the National Commission of Medical Residency (CNRM), these changes aim to modernize specialist training and increase the efficiency of available positions.

A key update allows for a second annual entry for residents, enabling institutions to fill vacancies that remained unoccupied after the primary selection process. This measure is intended to benefit doctors who graduate mid-year or those previously on waiting lists. The new rules also update academic calendars, enrollment periods, and selection processes to better align with the needs of the Unified Health System (SUS) and other healthcare services.
