Brazil Ministry of Mines and Energy launches electric vehicle infrastructure consultation
Brazil's Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has opened a public consultation to develop a national diagnosis for expanding electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. The initiative aims to identify legal and regulatory barriers, integrate charging stations into energy distribution networks, and improve energy planning as EV adoption accelerates.
Data from the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE) shows that electrified light vehicle registrations reached 381,609 between January and September, a 70% increase over the total recorded in 2025. In September alone, electrified vehicles accounted for 19.8% of light vehicle sales, exceeding official projections.
The consultation is organized into six thematic axes: charging access, connection to energy networks, distribution planning and demand management, data and projections, legal and regulatory barriers, and concentrated loads (such as urban bus fleets and logistics vehicles). Contributions can be submitted via digital forms until November 22, 2026.
This move follows the creation of the Department of Electromobility within the MME to address energy transition challenges. The growth in the sector is supported by significant investments from manufacturers including BYD, Stellantis, Volkswagen, Toyota, and GWM, with total investments estimated at R$130 billion through 2030.
