Brazil moves ahead with bridge projects in Tocantins and Alagoas

The federal government announced the construction of a new duplicated bridge on the BR‑235 over the Rio Tocantins, linking Pedro Afonso and Tupirama in Tocantins. The project, presented by DNIT director Fabio Pessoa da Silva Nunes and highlighted as a priority by vice‑governor Laurez Moreira, will be funded under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s administration, with a tender expected in August. Interim measures include four free‑service ferries and limited traffic for small vehicles, ambulances and waste‑collection trucks while the existing structure is monitored.

In Alagoas, the municipality of Penedo began the next phase of building a bridge at Ponta Mofina on 6 August. Mayor Ronaldo Lopes and infrastructure secretary Amanda Lima oversaw the start of work on the bridge heads, a critical step for stabilising the structure and improving year‑round access for residents and agricultural producers. The project aims to resolve long‑standing mobility challenges caused by difficult soil conditions and seasonal flooding.
